How many hours a day, days a week should an amateur boxer train (maximum), without injuring yourself or 'over-training'?

This questions answer is purely to the individual boxer, time of year, standard and age.

As a rough a guide a beginner should look at a minimum of 2 times a week, juniors 1 1/4 hour training sessions with skill and fun element prioritised. Steady runs 2 times a week not on gym nights to build stamina, lose/control weight.

Seniors, depending on level from 3-5 gym sessions a week, roadwork, Interval/speed end/pure speed runs depending on season and level of competition. Weight work depending on desired results sessions in gym lasting from 1-30 hrs to 2 hr sessions. Some need to train twice daily.

Its very subjective and as i have already said it is to the individual boxers requirements so flexibility is the key. However REST is as important as the training element as is dietry requirements and the correct ratio of fueling the body for intense work.

Unfortunately injuries do happen, precautions can be taken with a good warm up routine lasting no less than 10 minutes. A gradually increased aerobic warm up imo is the best method. I see too many people stretching to much before a training session, save that til after the hard work. The muscles are much more plyable and good flushing techniques can be used to get rid of waste products that build up such as Lactic acid. This prevents the onset or aids the discomfort of DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) This is an important aspect of training as iff you try to work the muscles with DOMS you can have a negative effect on training as you will lose lean body mass.

Hope this helps but bear in mind this is only a very inexhaustive guide and it really is down to the coach and the individual he is coaching.
